Moorlands for the Future Final Report : Visitor Responsibility and the Moorlands

چکیده
Outputs and delivery issues for MFF This work informs MFF concerning the practical value of understanding the visitor in order to inform practice, management and environmental works and their communication in a sensitive environment. This small pilot project provides a sound basis both of existing patters of influence and visitor responsibility, and an informed platform for a thorough project that is able to build on the piloted data and methods.

Environmental change in moorland landscapes
Moorlands are unique environments found in uplands of the temperate zone including in the UK, New Zealand and Ireland, and in some high altitude tropical zones such as the Andean páramos. Many have been managed through grazing, burning or drainage practices. However, there are a number of other environmental and social factors that are likely to drive changes in management practice over the nex...
متن کاملClimate change and the future occurrence of moorland wildfires in the Peak District of the UK
We investigated the impact of climate change on the number of wildfires in the Peak District uplands of northern England. Wildfires in peat can result in severe carbon loss and damage to water supplies, and fighting such fires is difficult and costly in such a remote location. The Peak District is expected to experience warmer, wetter winters and hotter, drier summers. Local weather simulations...
متن کاملShifting Impacts of Climate Change: Long-Term Patterns of Plant Response to Elevated CO2, Drought, and Warming Across Ecosystems
Field experiments that expose terrestrial ecosystems to climate change factors by manipulations are expensive to maintain, and typically only last a few years. Plant biomass is commonly used to assess responses to climate treatments and to predict climate change impacts. However, response to the treatments might be considerably different between the early years and a decade later. The aim of th...
متن کاملKnowledge Based Interpretation of Objects in Topographic Maps and Moorlands in Aerial Images
For the automatic interpretation of remote sensing data and maps prior knowledge derived from a GIS and general knowledge about the properties of the scene objects, such as form, size and texture, can be used to preset constraints for the interpretation process. The image primitives to be interpreted are extracted by image processing algorithms which need in most cases a number of parameters. D...
متن کاملThe care of the chronic sick. IV. A comparison of data from hospitals in the Stoke-on-Trent area with data from Western Road Infirmary, Birmingham.
We selected four hospitals which draw their patients from urban and rural districts in the Stoke-on-Trent area, and which differ in size and character from the Birmingham hospital. Brief particulars of these institutions are as follows: (i) City General Hospital, Newcastle-under-Lyme (formerly the London Road Institution). A general hospital with 915 beds distributed thus: Beds for the acute si...
